Dad jokes, cars and how to be healthy

What time did the man go to the dentist?

Tooth hurt-y

If you found that funny, chances are you’re a dad.  That means this email is especially for you.

It’s Men’s Health Month – time to take stock of the health of all those fathers, brother, sons, husbands and partners out there.  When it comes to men’s health the statistics could be a lot better.

According to the Men’s Health Week website one Kiwi man dies every three hours from a preventable illness. These illnesses include some cancers, depression, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The good news is there’s plenty men can do to take charge of their health, and it’s never too late to start.

The magic formula of avoiding smoking, drinking no more than three standard drinks a day and no more than 15 in a week, exercising for 30 minutes a day, eating plenty of vegetables and watching portion size is a great place to start.

Also, why not make this month the time of year you go for a regular check up with your GP.  That way it’s easy to remember and you can put your mind at ease if any niggling issues have been bothering you for a while.

I know the men out there can do this. My car’s registration is due.  I only know this because the man in my life told me.

If left to my own devices I would probably be driving around with no oil and water, flat tyres and no warrant.

It’s a tired cliché, but men seem to be great at keeping cars legal and roadworthy.  It follows that if you applied this same skillset to your health you’d keep your motor running for much longer, meaning you’ll be around to tell many more dad jokes for years to come.
