GM-free?

Are there any genetically modified foods on sale in NZ?

GM food products on sale in NZ – either as a whole food or as an ingredient in a processed food – must be labelled as genetically modified. Look for the words 'genetically modified' on the ingredients list.

Only GM ingredients that have been preapproved and safety assessed are able to be sold here. Currently there are over 30 GM foods that have been approved for sale in Australia and NZ; these are all imported products used as ingredients in processed foods. There are no commercially grown GM crops in NZ. No fresh GM vegetables, fruit, meat or fish are sold here.
