I’ll have the apple please, with extra bacteria

Austrian researchers have suggested that organic apples contain more diverse and balanced bacteria with fewer nasties than conventionally grown apples. Each apple contains approximately 100 million bacteria, but no matter how much you wash it the bacteria will stay because they’re found in the core.

The researchers claim the bacteria aren’t all bad, and the strains you encounter depend on which bits of the apple you eat, and whether you opt for organic. But, regardless of whether apples have been grown organically or not, they are all a great source of satisfying fibre and antioxidants.
