Faecal transplants of healthy gut bacteria have shown promise as a treatment for lower colon inflammation in two US patients.
The two cancer patients received gut bacteria from healthy donors to successfully treat a side effect of their immunotherapy treatment, colitis, according to a report from the University of Texas. Not only were the colitis symptoms eased but, by collecting stool samples before and after the procedure, it was established that the transplant restored protective bacteria to the gut microbiome.
