This vs that: Frozen sweet treats

Feel like an icy sweet treat but not sure which tub to pop in your supermarket trolley?

We compared one serve of Tip Top Strawberries and Cream Ice Cream (100ml serve = 53g, 2 litre $6.49) with one serve of Tip Top Creamy Strawberry Yoghurt Ice Cream (100ml serve = 58g, 1.6 litre $7.69).

Energy

  • Ice cream: 459kJ
  • Yoghurt ice cream: 379 kJ

The regular ice cream has 21 per cent more kilojoules.

Fat and saturated fat

  • Ice cream: 4.7g fat, 2.8g sat fat
  • Yoghurt ice cream: 1.5g fat, 0.9g sat fat

The yoghurt ice cream is much lower in fat and therefore saturated fat because the main ingredients are low-fat ice cream and yoghurt (made with skim milk).

Sugars

  • Ice cream: 13.5g
  • Yoghurt ice cream: 15g

The sugars come from milk sugars, strawberries (purée or fruit mix) and added sugar. We don’t know how much is added sugar, but we do know these are both sweet treats rather than everyday foods.

Protein

  • Ice cream: 0.7g
  • Yoghurt ice cream: 1.9g

The yoghurt ice cream adds more protein, so may be slightly more filling, but it’s not a lot.
