Crockpot pea and ham soup

Our classic, low calorie, dairy free slow cooker pea and ham soup recipe is a tasty crowd-pleaser, super-easy to make, a great winter weekend lunch or dinner when you come home tired and late, high in fibre, iron, diabetes friendly with an easy gluten free option - super comforting.

  • 1 ham or bacon hock
    • 1 large onion, diced
    • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
    • 2 carrots, diced
    • 1 stick celery, diced
    • 3 bay leaves
    • 500g yellow or green split peas
    • 1.5 litres water
    • basil or parsley, to garnish
    • freshly ground black pepper

    1 Place all ingredients in the slow cooker, adding the water last.

    2 Put the lid on and cook on high for 4-5 hours or on low for 8-10 hours, until the peas are very soft and the ham falls off the bone. Remove ham bone from the slow cooker and remove the fat and meat from the bone. Discard fat. Roughly chop the meat and add back to the soup.

    3 Garnish with pepper and basil or parsley and serve.
