More supermarkets to join cage-free egg movement
Eggs sold at Foodstuffs’ supermarkets New World, Pak’nSave and Four Square will be will be 100 per cent cage free by 2027.
Countdown supermarket has already promised to sell only barn-raised and free-range eggs by 2025.
Changes to animal welfare laws late last year mean that battery egg farming will be phased out by 2022.
Sales of free range and barn-raised eggs have ‘grown significantly’ over the last decade, according to Foodstuffs managing director Steve Anderson.
Ten years was a reasonable and realistic timeframe as many suppliers would need to change the way they currently farm, Mr Anderson says in a press release.
