In season early winter: Navel oranges

Oranges are such a staple fruit in New Zealand that they often aren’t appreciated for their versatility.

Buying

Choose firm fruit, free from marks.

Storing

Oranges can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge.

Nutrition

Citrus fruits contain over 170 phyto-chemicals, compounds providing a variety of health benefits. The most prevalent in navel oranges are antioxidants, vitamin C (fights infections) and carotenoids.

Using

Oranges make a great snack but if you want to get a bit more creative, give these fresh ideas a go:

  • Try an immune-boosting orange, lemon and ginger freshly squeezed juice.
  • Make salad vinaigrette by combining orange zest and orange juice, wholegrain mustard and balsamic vinegar.
  • Add orange zest to baking for extra zing. We like it in carrot cupcakes. Sprinkle the zest over the icing, too.
  • Cut oranges in half, scoop out the flesh and dice. Make jelly following packet directions and add the diced orange. Pour back into orange halves and set in refrigerator. Fun for kid’s parties.
  • Orange slices are a great addition to salads. Try orange slices, salad greens, red onion, avocado and chopped macadamia nuts. Serve with honey mustard dressing.
  • Make a glaze for dessert crêpes using orange juice and orange zest, maple syrup, butter and a dash of brandy.
  • Make a ham on the bone extra-special by covering with orange slices, secured using whole cloves, before brushing with your favourite glaze.
  • Recipe idea: Citrus caper salsa

Did you know? It is believed that a mutation caused navel oranges to become seedless.
