Shopping for foods with less sugar

A diet low in added sugar is now recognised as a key part of a healthy eating pattern. The World Health Organization recommends free sugars make up no more than 5 per cent of our total energy intake. Free sugars include all added sugars, plus any sugars found naturally in a syrup or extract.

Remember to read ingredients labels to see if sugar has been added. Here are some of our picks for products with lower free sugars.

Wattie’s Tomato Sauce 50% Less Sugar & 35% Less Salt

Contains less than half the sugar of the regular version — 2.1g sugar per 15g serve. With a little sugar from the tomatoes this serve has around 1.5g free sugars.

Sanitarium Smooth Peanut Butter No Added Sugar Or Salt

This is such a great product — not only less sugar but less salt as well! 1g sugar per 1 tablespoon serve, and none of them free sugars.

Anchor Greek Style Natural Yoghurt

Many yoghurts have added sugars, as well as the natural sugar from the milk. At 2.5g sugar per 100g serve there are no free sugars in this yoghurt.

Wattie’s Full of Beanz Baked Beans Lite 30% Less Sugar

Baked beans are such a great food — it’s good to see some with less sugar (and less salt). 9.7g sugar per 1/2 can serve, mostly free sugars.

See our super-healthy Homemade baked beans recipes!

Porridge (made with 1/2 banana and 1/2 cup trim milk)

This is sweet enough with around 15g sugars from our banana and milk. No need for free sugars here.
