Nutrition information per serve
Custard is a delicious addition to any winter pudding. With milk as the main ingredient, custard is a good source of protein and contains calcium, which is good for bone health. But custard is a treat food because it can also give us extra energy, fat and sugar that we maybe don’t want, or need.
Meadow Fresh Vanilla Custard comes in at more than 100kJ more per 100g serving than the Healthy Food Guide homemade custard. The main culprit for the increased energy is the amount of sugar in the Meadow Fresh product – about 40 per cent more than in the Healthy Food Guide recipe. The Meadow Fresh custard also looks like it is made with full cream milk, resulting in a higher amount of saturated fat. When you make your own custard, you can choose which milk to use. We used trim milk. Both products contain about 10 per cent of your daily calcium requirements.
