Chocolate orange custard

A simple chocolate custard made with dark chocolate drops and orange essence. The perfect way for kids to enjoy fruit in the winter!

  • 5 teaspoons cornflour
  • 2 cups skim milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla paste
  • 70g dark chocolate chips
  • 2 teaspoons maple syrup
  • a few drops orange essence (see tips)
  • To serve
  • 4 mandarins
  • 2 kiwifruit
  • wooden skewers for the fruit

    1 In a cup, mix cornflour with ¹/³ cup of the milk to make a paste. Add remaining milk and combine.

    2 Into a small saucepan over a low heat, pour the mixture and add vanilla paste, stirring until the custard thickens.

    3 Remove pan from the heat, add chocolate chips and stir until melted. Add maple syrup and orange essence.

    4 Segment mandarins and slice kiwifruit. Thread the fruit onto wooden skewers and pour custard into bowls. Serve as a warm chocolate custard fondue.

    Variations

    Make it vegan: Use almond milk. Check dark chocolate chips are vegan.

    Make it gluten free: Check cornflour and chocolate chips are gluten free.

    Make it low FODMAP: Use lactose-free or almond milk.

    HFG tip

    You can vary the flavour of the custard by using mint essence instead of orange. You can also serve this custard cold, but it will be much thicker.
